honing in

living in alignment 💞

Last night, a friend took me to task.

I'm notorious for juggling eight balls at once. I'm not just a writer; I'm a writer and a disability activist and a mental health advocate. I always have a dozen projects taking up space in my head—zines, blog posts, Instagram Reels. I like to keep busy, so it's only natural that my instinct is to always do as much as I can.

When my friend told me to "focus on one thing," I was confused. I don't jump between writing projects. I don't pretend I'm some ultra-talented savant with a thousand career choices at my disposal. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized she was right.

I do need to pick a course.

Just because I juggle eight balls at once doesn't mean I'm good at it. Inevitably, things fall through the cracks. And the thing is? I don't want them to. More than anything, I want to live in alignment—with my goals, yes, but also my values.

I've been clinging to "mental health advocacy" because, deep down, I was afraid of letting my M.A. go to waste. I'm a disability activist by virtue of genetics, so it seemed logical to add mental health to my pre-existing advocacy list. Why not, right?

But I'm only human. And I'm certainly no juggler.

The world is gray outside my window, dreary, with bursts of autumn red. With the holidays coming up, and obligations quadrupling, I need to hone in—honor my passions while simultaneously recognizing that no one can excel at eight things at once.

🐺 I published four columns this month: "Anxiety and Apple Orchards Redux," "My Latest Procedure Didn't Go As Planned," "What the Mentally Ill 20-Somethings Do," and "Where Everybody Knows Your Name."

🌘 I made the difficult decision to shelve WANING CRESCENT. I talked a bit about it on Instagram, but know that I fully intend to revisit Blaire, Jacen, and Tabitha's story. I love them to bits, and I'm more than happy to take a step back so I can make the book the best it can be.

📸 I've been quiet on social media as I double down on this draft, but I'm still posting semi-regularly on Instagram.

🥀 Speaking of drafts, I'm on track to finish #Ouroboros by Dec. 15! Please clap.
